Study in Argentina

Your exchange in Argentina will prove to be the adventure of a lifetime!

Argentina, “the land of silver,” is a country big enough to keep any visitor endlessly fascinated, yet intimate enough to feel like home. Students on the summer program will be immersed in the language and culture of Argentina, and year/semester students will get the opportunity to go on an excursion to some of the most beautiful parts of the country such as Patagonia or the Iguazú Falls.

“Since my year abroad, I’ve been able to use my experiences, my fluency in Spanish and my knowledge gained from all of my international friends in my every day life. I’m always encouraging peers to study abroad, travel (especially to Argentina), and am looking to do another year abroad through college. Studying abroad with YFU was an unforgettable experience and I would strongly recommend it!”

Argentina has a history that dates all the way back to the Incas of the late 1400s. Today, diverse groups have made Argentina a blend of fascinating cultures, with Italian and Spanish heritage as well as British, Irish, German, Polish, Arabic, and Jewish influences. The combination of cultures makes visiting Argentina a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world!

Bordered by five countries, Argentina is so large that it is divided into 6 regions: Las Pampas, Gran Chaco, Mesopotamia, Patagonia, Cuyo, and Noroeste Argentino. Each region is very different, from Cuyo with its high Andes mountains, to Patagonia – a land without trees! Argentina has a variety of different climates and geographies, which complement the diverse people that live throughout the country.
La Familia is a huge part of Argentinean culture. Extended family usually lives nearby, and families gather regularly to spend time together. You will likely have the opportunity to participate in many family outings, and be welcomed with open arms. You may even get a chance to visit the country’s beautiful capital city, Buenos Aires, home to places like the Casa Rosada and the Caminato – famous for the tango! Through these experiences, you will learn all about Argentina’s rich history and culture – and maybe even pick up some dance moves!

School in Argentina is mandatory from ages five to seventeen. The educational system is broken down into five different categories; initial, primary, secondary, vocational, and universities. Argentina has an impressive literacy rate of 97%.

In your free time, you’ll have no shortage of things to do! You will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of social activities with your family and new friends, including movies, parties, and trips around town to marvel at the beautiful scenery. For your competitive and athletic side, there are plenty of sports to choose from! Soccer, or futbol, is the country’s most popular sport, but you can enjoy all types of sports, such as rugby, tennis, volleyball, basketball, or field hockey. You’ll definitely put your dancing skills to use, dancing the tango in a restaurant or at a disco with friends!

There’s no doubt that Argentina will live up to its worldwide fame and satisfy your sense of adventure, curiosity, and enjoyment. With its deep history, rich culture, and entertaining activities, Argentina will provide you with the priceless experience of a lifetime!

Choose Your Program

+ Academic Year Programs

During your time in Argentina, you will live with a host family and attend a local high school. Part of your experience will be:

School

YFU students attend both public and private schools. The type you attend will depend on your host family. One major difference that you will discover is that teachers change classrooms during the day, instead of students. In Argentina, your classmates are with you all day, giving you a chance to make good friends quickly. With your classmates, you will study 12 to 15 compulsory subjects two to three times a week. You can choose from four fields: humanities, science, business, or technical.

Orientations

All students applying for the semester or year program must be available for a mandatory 3-day National Pre-Departure Orientation, which usually takes place in mid-July (or early December for winter programs.) This orientation is a required part of the program aimed at preparing students for their experience overseas. All students will participate in a one-day local pre-departure orientation along with their families in May or June. Students also have an arrival orientation in Buenos Aires. All orientation costs are included in program tuition.

Extracurriculars

Outside of regular classes, you can choose to play sports or take computer or art classes.

Special Program Offers

Year and Semester program students will also usually have the option of participating in a number of educational trips and excursions during their stay, at an additional cost. For example, YFU has typically offered a one week camp in February and another one week trip in April or May. In previous years, the camp brought exchange students together in the beautiful countryside, staying at a campsite in Nahuel Huapi National Park, near Bariloche in the northern part of Patagonia. Students have also had the opportunity to add on a trip to explore the famous Iguazú Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, which included a guided tour of the jungle and a visit to a local indigenous village. Closer to the program date, participating students will be provided with more exciting details about these trips and camps!
