Scholarship Amount

This is a $5,000 scholarship that covers a portion of your tuition.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident

  • Hold a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale

  • Demonstrate financial need through the completion of a FACTS application. FACTS is an independent, third-party that assesses student eligibility for tuition assistance. For information about FACTS and the application process, please download the FACTS Information Sheet

  • Priority selection will be provided to a student residing in North Carolina, however, all students demonstrating financial need are encouraged to apply for this award.

Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for

  • Remaining tuition after the scholarship award
  • Visa fees (if necessary)

  • Any excess luggage tariffs

  • Personal spending money

  • If a scholarship winner cancels their program less than 30 days before departure, they are responsible for paying for their airfare and cancellation fee.

  • Within one month of returning home, the student must provide a report and photos detailing their exchange experience to YFU.

The scholarship covers round-trip international and domestic airline travel, placement with a carefully selected host family, regional orientation for scholarship recipients and their parents, preparatory materials, support services in the host country, and comprehensive insurance.

The scholarship is open to U.S. high school students in freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior class standing who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students who have previously participated in a semester or year exchange in another country are not eligible for the Culture Connect scholarship.

The scholarship is available for Fall Semester, Fall Trimester, and Fall Year programs. The application deadline is February 15, 2025.

Applicants must complete an online application, submit a FACTS application for financial aid, provide a teacher recommendation, a host family letter, answer three short essay questions, and submit various documents including a health certificate and photos. There are two application fees: a $10 non-refundable YFU application fee and a $40 FACTS application fee for financial need assessment.
