Scholarship Amount

This is a full scholarship which covers 100% of tuition.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be entering Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year in high school

  • A U.S. Citizen

  • Reside in one of the following counties: Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Sutter, Yuba, or San Joaquin in California, or Washoe County, Nevada

  • Meet the age requirements outlined on each country page

  • Approved to go on the program through YFU’s standard application procedure

  • Demonstrate financial need through completion of a FACTS application. FACTS is an independent, third-party that assesses student eligibility for tuition assistance. For information about FACTS and the application process, please download the Facts Information Sheet.

Scholarship Recipients are Responsible for

  • Passport

  • Visa fees (if necessary)

  • Any excess luggage tariffs

  • Personal spending money

  • Upon returning home, scholarship winners are expected to complete at least one presentation in their school or community to share their experiences, teach others about the culture in their host country, and encourage other students to participate in foreign exchange

  • Within one month of returning home, the student must provide a report and photos detailing their exchange experience to YFU, to be shared with WEH Foundation

The scholarship covers round-trip international and domestic airline travel, placement with a carefully selected host family, regional orientation for scholarship recipients and their parents, preparatory materials, support services in the host country, and comprehensive insurance.

The scholarship is open to U.S. high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Students must also reside in one of the following counties: Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Sutter, Yuba, or San Joaquin in California, or Washoe County, Nevada.

Students who have previously participated in a semester or year exchange in another country are not eligible for scholarships.

The scholarship is available for Summer programs in Argentina, Ecuador, Greece, India, Japan, Korea, Paraguay, Thailand or Uruguay. The application deadline is February 15, 2025.

Applicants must complete an online application, submit a FACTS application for financial aid, provide a teacher recommendation, a host family letter, answer three short essay questions, and submit various documents including a health certificate and photos. There are two application fees: a $75 non-refundable YFU application fee and a $40 FACTS application fee for financial need assessment.
